Here's one great rockfishing photo. Fishing for salmon on Tuesday the 1st
was good. We had 13 fish for 12 anglers. The average size was 8 lbs with
the largest fish weighing 17 lbs. We mooched about four miles off of
Pescadero in the deep water and most of the fish were caught between 150 and
200 feet.

After some slow salmon fishing in the beginning of July, things have picked
up over the last week or so. We have been mooching at 15 & 30, which is
four miles off Pescadero in 250 feet of water. The fish have been deep -
150 to 230 feet. We had limits on Tuesday to 22 pounds with a 12 pound
average. On Saturday, our largest salmon weighed 27 pounds. Fishing for
rockfish is still fantastic. After a slow start in May, the rockfish have
really been biting. We had limits of rockfish for 28 people on Sunday, with
three nice Ling Cod. Over the July 4th holiday, my father and I went to
Dutch Harbor, Alaska to fish for giant Halibut. And, like always, Dad
caught the big one. It weighed in at 302 pounds.

After a bit of a lull, fishing has really picked up this week. We caught limits every day, with our largest fish weighing in at 34lbs (caught by Robin King of Half Moon Bay). The Hulicat pulled in the biggest salmon of the year so far, weighing in at 44 pounds. Fishing out of Half Moon Bay is ideal right now - the fish are close, the weather is good, and frequent whale sightings are an added bonus. Whale watching on Thursday was as good as it gets - our whale was doing the backstroke no more than 10 feet away from the "Chubasco". We watched the playful humpbacks breach, fluke, and repeatedly hit the water with their fins. Looks like we'll continue to do well right out of Pillar Point Harbor - the weekends are pretty full, but space is available during the week.
